THE VINEYARDS

Our partners provide the winery with their vineyards’ harvest, located in different areas of the island, which provides the Las Tirajanas’ wines their particular character and personality.

The winery produces 8 different kinds of wine that reflect the microclimates where the vineyards are located. The vineyards in the South often have extreme winds, with hard, basaltic, arid soil as it was formed during the last volcanic activities. The vineyards located in the ‘Medianías’, this is, the middle regions of the island, are old and of traditional red grapes. These old vineyards are located above 1.000 meters above sea level, in steep slopes, with volcanic soil, very loose and gaining a special richness from all of the benefits that come with the trade winds and the mist, improving the harvest when ripening.

South Area

The vineyards located in the Caldera de Tirajana and Fataga, are from plantations that where created in the nineties and in trellised in order to facilitate their growing and their better aeration. These vineyards are growing old and with each new harvest they provide new nuances and an improvement in quality. This area is distinguished for the cultivation of variations of white grapes, volcanic Malvasía, Verijadiego, Albillo, Verdello, White Listan, Muscatel and many other of minor production.

The landscape is unique, surrounding the vineyards are palm trees and olive trees that make the ravines in the south of the island so remarkable. The grapes are of very aromatic and distinguished varieties that allow us to produce different types of white wines, some monovarietal, that stand out for their personality and distinguished aromas.

The 'Medianías' Areas

The vineyards in the ‘Medianías’, this is, the middle regions of the island, provide us with most of the red grape harvest, with which we produce the winery’s red wine. These vineyards are over 50 years old and are traditionally cultivated, with red grape varieties typical of the island, the most distinguished being the Black Listan. These are vineyards that grow in altitude, in strong volcanic slopes of difficult access that the hardworking winegrowers have looked after for generations. The cultivation form of these vineyards is in the traditional cup-shape vine training. The soil is normally of volcanic lapilli, very loose, sometimes in clay soils that withhold the water and provides nutrients. The microclimate of this area is characterized by the ‘sea of clouds’ that is created by the trade winds, particularly in summer, when the grape is ripening.

The more recent plantations of red grapes, both in the South and in the ‘Medianías’, are grown in trellised and provide with red grapes of recovered varieties, such as black Vijariego, Castellana, black Baboso and Tintilla.
